Steamboy is the most expensive animated film in Japanese history with a budget of some 2.4 billion yen (roughly $20 million). Steamboy is a retro science fiction film that appears (from the images that have been released) to have a very strong sense of design. Fall 2003 Release Date was pushed back until early 2004 due to Katsuhiro wanting the ending of the movie to be well done.
Rei is a young inventor living in the U.K. in the middle of the 19th century. Shortly before the first ever World Expo, a marvelous invention called the "Steam Ball", behind which a menacing power is hidden, arrives at his door from his grandfather Roid in the U.S. Meanwhile the nefarious Ohara Foundation has sent men to aquire the Steam Ball so that they can use its power towards their own illicit ends.

Mugen is a fierce animal like warrior with a unique break-dance inspired fighting style. Jin has a more traditional style but don`t think of this as a weakness because his skills are amazing. The two contrasting samurai warriors are far from friends, yet their separate paths seem to cross anyways. Mugen is wandering aimlessly through the woods when he stumbles upon a teahouse where he meets Jin and Fuu (A ditzy waitress, but don`t think she doesn`t have any hidden skills of her own). Fuu convinces them both to come with her in search of a mysterious samurai that smells like sunflowers and their journey begins. This modernized hip-hop tale breaks the barriers of the common, historical, samurai anime.

The first story about the Juuni Kokuki (the Twelve Kingdoms) begins in Tokyo. Yoko Nakajima, an unconfident school girl tired of being head of class, has nightmares about weird monsters every day.
Suddenly, a strange man, Keiki, shows up at school and offers to be her protector. A few moments later a giant bird, a Koucho, attacks the school. Keiki gives her a sword to defend herself, but she refuses to use it. Keiki takes her and two of her classmates away, and they flee through the reflection of the moonlight on the ocean.
The next morning, Yoko wakes up, marooned near the coast of a country unknown to her. There is no trace of her classmates or Keiki to be seen, only the sword lies next to her. When she gets to a nearby village, she finds herself arrested. Why was she brought to this alien world? Why are these weird monsters and even the villagers attacking her?
There is no Juuni Kokuki manga. This anime is based on text novels written by Fuyumi Ono. It features a complex fantasy world with a rich mythology behind it. The series tells us not only Yoko Nakajima`s story, but also stories about other people who came to live in this world. This series ended at episode 45.
