Live action sci-fi movie based on a 1973 japanime of the same name (Shinzo Ningen Casshan). Theme song by Utada Hikaru.
Why must we keep fighting?" Set in a uniquely retro-futuristic world, "CASSHERN" addresses this theme in a powerful drama that is at once entertaining and profound.
The author behind this extraordinary project is Kazuaki Kiriya, an acclaimed fashion photographer and music video director. In addition to co-writing and directing the film, he also served as its cinematographer.
One of several films around the world that was produced almost entirely on a "digital backlot" (i.e. shot with the actors in front of blue/green-screens with all backgrounds added in post-production, a technique which has been used for TV, video and video game production for many years).
Made for 5 billion yen, "Casshern" tries to address the idealistic question proposed in Shakespear's "Hamlet" (Why do people fight with each other?) It is also a continuation of the Japanese animation, "Shinzou Ningen Casshern" which was broadcasted back in 1973. A riot occurs within the robots that were made to clean up environmental pollution. As a result, a professor of robotic engineering revised his "son" Casshern to calm the riot.

Thirty-five years after the legendary Battle with Bodolza`s Main Fleet, the New Macross 7 fleet journeys to the center of the galaxy. Having once faced total extinction, the surviving Humans on Earth drew up an ambitious plan to ensure their survival. Super-long-range emigration fleets (such as the Macross 7 fleet) would spread Humankind across the galaxy. Meanwhile, close-range colonization of planets (such as Macross Plus`s Eden) would counteract Earth`s population explosion and dwindling supplies. Seven years have passed since Captain Maxmillian Jenius led the 37th long-range emigration fleet from Earth. Inside City 7, the main habitation "block" of the Macross 7 flagship, the Fire Bomber rock band prepares for their first live concert. Something`s amiss, though ....
